Apple USA Announces Distribution Pacts With Ingram Micro, Merisel And
Tech Data
Distributors To Fuel Apple VAR Program
CAMPBELL, California--February 25, 1992--Apple USA today announced
that Ingram Micro Inc., Merisel Inc., and Tech Data Corp. have been
selected to participate in a newly formed distribution program which
will extend the reach of Macintosh computer solutions in the value-
added reseller (VAR) community.
Apple's new VAR distributor program is designed to broaden the
company's support of value-added resellers and other vertically
focused solutions partners who service, support and sell Apple-
branded solutions. Typically these are small to medium-sized VARs
aligned with Apple target vertical markets including: design and
imaging, integrated media, architecture, publishing, finance and
accounting, legal, engineering and real estate.
"Value added resellers are a central component in Apple's strategy to
provide Macintosh solutions to business customers with specialized
needs," said Bob Puette, president of Apple USA. "Ingram Micro,
Merisel and Tech Data each offer a strong VAR following with a
differentiated vertical focus. These new partnerships will help
Apple reach new customers while complementing current distribution."
Apple USA expects to officially launch the new VAR distributor
program during the second calendar quarter of 1992. At that time,
all three distributors will be authorized to distribute the entire
line of Apple products, including hardware, software and peripherals.
Distributors were chosen to participate based on vertical market
reach as well as each organization's ability to provide enhanced
efficiencies in purchasing and delivery, technical support, training,
financing programs and communications.
"Apple did extensive research to understand the requirements of its
specialized business customers and VARs, and how to best serve those
needs," said Cliff Jenks, vice president of Apple USA Channel
Development. "We reviewed a number of options and it became clear
that these distributors offered the right mix of programs and
expertise to enable Apple to meet its goal of more effectively
addressing the small and medium-sized VAR marketplace.
"This move supports Apple's marketshare strategy by extending our
reach against one of the fastest growing sectors of the personal
computer marketplace--small business," added Jenks.
Ingram Micro Inc., Merisel and Tech Data Corp. will recruit and pre-
qualify vertically focused small to medium enterprise VARs. Apple
USA will maintain final approval over VAR authorizations.
Value-added resellers that currently buy direct from Apple as well as
dealer supported VARs will have the option of transitioning to the
VAR Distributor program. Apple will continue to maintain a small
number of direct relationships with VARs.
Apple utilizes a network of multiple distribution channels in the
U.S. to serve its broad base of customers, including computer
specialty dealers which make up the bulk of U.S. reseller
authorizations; Apple Education Sales Consultants in the K-12 market;
Campus Resellers in Higher Education, and Government resellers. In
addition, Apple solutions are available to systems integrators,
independent system vendors and consultants.
